Is the MB EQS an Alternative Option to Tesla Model S?

Posted on February 24, 2025 by [email protected]

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the all-electric counterpart to the S-Class, blending cutting-edge EV technology with the brand’s signature luxury. It’s available in both sedan (EQS 450+, EQS 580, AMG EQS) and SUV (EQS SUV 450+, EQS SUV 580) variants, offering a high-tech, smooth, and ultra-quiet driving experience.

Performance & Driving Experience

TrimHorsepowerTorque (lb-ft)0-60 mph (sec)Range (miles)
EQS 450+329 hp417 lb-ft~5.9 sec~350 miles
EQS 580 4MATIC516 hp631 lb-ft~4.1 sec~340 miles
AMG EQS649 hp (751 hp w/ boost)700+ lb-ft~3.4 sec~320 miles
  • Ride Quality: One of the smoothest EVs on the market, thanks to adaptive air suspension. The rear-wheel steering (up to 10°) makes it surprisingly maneuverable despite its size.
  • Acceleration: The EQS 580 and AMG EQS are seriously quick, but even the base 450+ delivers effortless power.
  • Handling: It leans more towards comfort than sportiness. The AMG version offers tighter handling but doesn’t match high-performance EVs like the Porsche Taycan or Tesla Model S Plaid in cornering ability.
  • Braking & Regen: Strong regenerative braking allows for one-pedal driving, but the brake feel can be inconsistent.

Technology & Interior

Cabin & Comfort

  • Materials: High-end leather, open-pore wood, and aluminum accents create an opulent environment.
  • Space: Extremely roomy, especially in the rear seats, though headroom in the sedan could be better due to the sloping roofline.
  • Silence: One of the quietest EVs, with advanced soundproofing and active noise cancellation.

MBUX Hyperscreen (Optional on Some Trims)

  • Three integrated OLED screens (17.7-inch center, 12.3-inch driver, 12.3-inch passenger).
  • AI-powered voice assistant (“Hey Mercedes”) and customizable interface.
  • Augmented reality navigation that overlays directions onto real-world footage.
  • Fast UI but can feel overwhelming at first.

Other Tech Highlights

  • Biometric authentication (fingerprint, facial, and voice recognition).
  • Driver-assist features: Advanced ADAS suite with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, and semi-autonomous driving.
  • Rear-wheel steering (up to 10°) makes parking and U-turns easier.

Charging & Efficiency

  • Battery: 107.8 kWh usable capacity.
  • Range: Up to 350 miles (EQS 450+), 340 miles (EQS 580), 320 miles (AMG EQS).
  • Charging:
    • DC Fast Charging (200 kW): 10-80% in ~31 minutes.
    • Level 2 Charging (9.6 kW home charger): ~11 hours for a full charge.
  • Efficiency: ~3.0-3.3 mi/kWh, which is good for a luxury EV but not as efficient as a Tesla Model S.

Pros & Cons

Pros ✅

✔ Luxury-Level Comfort: One of the most refined EVs available.
✔ MBUX Hyperscreen: A high-tech, futuristic interface.
✔ Quiet & Smooth Ride: Best-in-class refinement.
✔ Strong Range & Charging: Competitive with other premium EVs.
✔ Rear-Wheel Steering: Makes it easier to drive in tight spaces.

Cons ❌

✖ Pricey: Starts at ~$105K and climbs quickly with options.
✖ Not as Sporty as Some Rivals: Even the AMG version leans more toward luxury.
✖ Overwhelming Tech: Hyperscreen can be distracting for some users.
✖ Sloping Roofline in Sedan: Reduces rear headroom.

Verdict: Who Should Buy the EQS?

✅ Buy if you want a top-tier luxury EV with cutting-edge tech, incredible ride comfort, and premium features.
❌ Skip if you prefer a sportier drive (consider a Porsche Taycan or Tesla Model S Plaid) or need a more affordable luxury EV (BMW i5, Lucid Air Pure).
