The automotive industry is splitting into 2 worlds

And Ferrari’s new EV, the Luce, makes the divide impossible to ignore.

On one side:

Legacy luxury brands still treat the car like a mechanical masterpiece.

A standalone object.

A sculpture on wheels.

Ferrari’s engineering is extraordinary:
• 1,035 hp
• €550,000 price tag
• Physical accelerometers amplifying real chassis vibrations into the cabin
• No fake digital engine sounds

Pure engineering theater.

But on the other side, tech-first automakers are building something fundamentally different.

They don’t see the car as the product.

They see it as a connected computing platform.

That’s the real shift happening in automotive right now.

Take Xiaomi’s HyperOS strategy:

The phone, home, tablet, AI assistant, and vehicle all operate as one unified ecosystem.

The car is no longer isolated hardware.

It becomes a seamless extension of daily life.

And that changes the competitive battlefield entirely.

Because once EV performance becomes commoditized:
• 800V architectures
• silicon carbide power electronics
• structural battery packs
• sub-4 second acceleration

…the advantage shifts elsewhere.

Toward ecosystem integration.

Toward software.

Toward user experience continuity.

Former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo joked:
“This is surely a car the Chinese won’t copy from us.”

He’s probably right.

But not because the design is too unique.

Because the leading EV players have already moved on from copying Western automotive heritage.

They’re writing a completely different playbook.

The future premium vehicle may not be defined by horsepower alone.

It may be defined by how deeply it integrates into your digital life.

That raises a bigger question for the industry:

In a software-defined era, can a car remain truly premium if it operates like a digital island?
