But the more interesting story might be what it means for Tesla.
Most people see two separate companies.
I see a capital allocation story unfolding in real time.
Here’s why:
• Tesla shares have recently slipped while investors prepare for the market’s newest “must-own” growth asset.
• Tesla itself owns nearly 19 million Class A SpaceX shares, creating a fascinating financial link between the two.
• Institutional and retail attention is finite. Every dollar flowing toward SpaceX is a dollar not automatically flowing toward Tesla.
At exactly the same moment, Tesla is fighting its toughest battle yet – in China.
On paper, Gigafactory Shanghai is producing impressive numbers.
In May alone, wholesale deliveries reached nearly 86,000 units.
But volume isn’t the whole story.
Tesla is leaning on aggressive financing programs and promotional offers to defend market share in the world’s most competitive EV market.
Meanwhile, the landscape has changed.
China’s EV penetration rate is approaching two-thirds of the retail market.
BYD dominates scale.
Xiaomi is ramping production faster than many expected.
And a wave of vertically integrated domestic players is compressing margins across the industry.
Then there’s the software narrative.
Tesla still needs a successful rollout of Full Self-Driving in China to reinforce its high-margin technology story.
But regulatory approvals and local legal scrutiny remain significant hurdles.
The contrast couldn’t be sharper.
SpaceX is entering public markets with a premium built on AI, satellites, and future optionality.
Tesla is increasingly being valued like a mature global automaker fighting a brutal competitive war.
Maybe this is Elon Musk’s ultimate hedge.
Or maybe it’s a distraction arriving at the exact moment Tesla needs maximum focus.
Either way, if you’re watching the SpaceX IPO today, it might be worth paying just as much attention to what’s happening on the factory floors of Shanghai.
The real battle for capital and for the future of mobility – may be happening much closer to Earth.
